Frequently Asked Questions
A+ Wrap

Q
Does the A+ Wrap System meet the requirements of the D.O.T.?
A Yes, the A+ Wrap System has been thoroughly tested to ensure that prudent engineering methods of evaluation have been met. The testing includes, but not limited to constituent material test, hydrostatic burst, cyclic fatigue, cathodic disbondment and dent evaluations. The approval for use of composite repair systems is in the January 2000 release of the Federal Registry.

Q Under what conditions may mechanically applied composite wrap material be used for pipeline repairs by 451.62(b)?
A Case 167 Use of Mechanically Applied Composite Material Wrap for Pipeline Repairs, B31.4. It is the opinion of the committee that if it is not practical to take the pipeline out of service, non-leaking corroded areas may be repaired by the installation of a mechanically applied composite material wrap to reinforce the pipeline. Mechanically applied composite material wrap may be used provided that design and installation methods are proven for the intended service. The user is cautioned that a written qualified procedure performed by trained personnel is a requirement, and the record shall be retained in accordance with paragraph 455. (This case shall expire on April 30, 2000 unless previously annulled or reaffirmed), Argus 1/96 file.

Q When will ASME & PCC-2 code specifically list the use of composite repair systems?
A Next printing.

Q What is the A+ Wrap Repair System?
A The A+ Wrap Repair System is a pliable water-activated high strength composite sleeving system used to permanently repair external defects associated with general corrosion up to 80% wall loss, blunt dents and gouges. The system is comprised of a high compressive strength putty, an Epoxy Coating, Smart Pig Detector Tabs (as applicable) and the load carrying composite wrap. The defects must have ALL SHARP EDGES REMOVED to eliminate stress risers. The A+ Wrap Repair System restores the pipe to the full strength of pristine conditions.

Q How does the A+ Wrap Repair System work?
A The A+ Wrap System prevents or controls pipe expansion by sharing the hoop stress. The load carrying member is the water-activated composite wrap specifically designed for high pressure piping. The requirement is to create a “load transfer path” from the pipe to the composite wrap.

Q How is the “load transfer path” developed?
A

1) Prepping the pipe surface as required.

2)Fill all voids and “tented areas” with the proprietary high compressive strength filler material to a “near net” profile.

3)Apply the Epoxy Coating.

4)Tightly wrap the A+ Wrap around the pipe while ensuring that plenty of water is applied to the composite wrap during application. 5)Apply the constrictor wrap to the required area for proper curing.

Q What types of piping defects can be repaired by A+ Wrap?
A

1) External defects of the pipe surface up to 80% wall loss (all sharp edges must be removed).

2) Defects near welded areas with a depth of up to 50% wall loss and no more than 30% of the circumference.

3) Cracked areas in the pipe body – if the crack can be ground out.

4) Dents with a depth up to 12.5% of the pipe’s diameter.

5) Gouges provided they have been cleaned to give them a smooth profile.

6) Defects in the line’s inners surface as a temporary repair. The types of defects listed above can also be repaired on curved sections of pipe.

Q What types of defects can not to be repaired with A+ Wrap?
A Cracks, gouges or dents in the longitudinal or girth welds.

Q What types of testing have been conducted on the A+ Wrap system?
A All testing of the A+ Wrap System has been conducted by an Independent Testing Laboratory and the test program has been two-fold. 1) Testing of individual system components to establish physical properties and 2) Testing of the over-all system performance with EXTREME defects (up to 80% wall loss). The tests included tensile, lap shear, compressive, hydrostatic burst, cyclic fatigue, etc. The test data was compared to properties of existing systems. The data reflects superior results for both the individual components and the over-all system performance.

Q Has there been any testing of the A+ Wrap under cyclic loading (bending) conditions?
A The A+ Wrap System provides axial stiffness to the repaired area, but the system was not specifically designed to resist axial bending moments. The Pipeline Operator is to secure the pipe to their satisfaction with respect to the repair area. A+ Wrap System is designed to prevent “bulging” in ductile pipe by transferring the hoop stress from the pipe to the composite sleeves.

Q Is there a pressure rating limit on the A+ Wrap System?
A There are no pressure limits to using the A+ Wrap System because the design of Pipe Wrap Systems are based on the Maximum Working Stress of Steel Pipe. Since all pipelines are designed in accordance with the basic formula, where the maximum allowable wall stress is a constant regardless of pressure.

Q Can or has the A+ Wrap Repair System been used as a temporary repair?
A Although the A+ Wrap System is design for the permanent repair of external defects, it has frequently been used as a temporary repair for piping having internal defects. The longevity of the “temporary repair” is dependent upon internal rate of metal loss. When the product is used on piping with internal defects, it is classified as “temporary” because the composite repair can not mitigate the corrosion mechanism.

Q What is the limitation of A+ Wrap being applied to out of round pipe?
A A+ Wrap may be applied to pipe with non-concentric profiles as established by API Specifications (12.5% for gas pipeline and 10% for liquid pipelines). The primary concerns for installations are: A)Removal of stress risers. B)Surface preparations (NACE #1 desired or minimum of NACE #3, Sa 2 ½) C) The assurance of intimate contact with A+ Wrap via the high compressive strength filler. The objective is to ensure a “load transfer” path to the composite sleeve.

Q Do you have an engineering analysis tool or software for determining if A+ Wrap is a suitable method of repair (i.e. wall loss, surface area defect, etc.)?
A Yes, a simple “calculator” is available to determine the suitability and the required number of layers for an effective Permanent repair. Standard inputs are required (i.e. pipe diameter, wall thickness, pipe grade, defect axial length, defect depth, etc.)

Q Is the A+ Wrap System resistant to corrosion or atmospheric degradation? What coatings are recommended for protection of the repair sleeve?
A Yes, A+ Wrap system has UV inhibitors in the resin formulation, but an
application requirement is that an external protective coating is required regardless for both buried and above-ground conditions. As to a recommended coating, no specific coating is recommended and any may be used as long as the coating is opaque and will bond to composite material.

Q Are there Training Requirements for Installing the A+ Wrap system?
A

Yes, the A+ Wrap System may only be installed by Trained Personnel.

Level 1 Installer: Trained in the Field by Pipe Wrap L.L.C. Personnel or Certified
Trainers. This level of training provides specific application technique and general product knowledge.

Level 2 Installer: 1-1/2 day course (classroom & hands-on) either at the Customer’s or Pipe Wrap L.L.C. Facility. This level of training provides application techniques for all scenarios and thorough product knowledge.

Trainer: 3 day course (classroom & hands-on) either at the Customer’s or Pipe Wrap L.L.C. Facility. This level of training provides application techniques for all scenarios, thorough product knowledge, use of engineering analysis software, etc. The individual will be fully qualified to train others to install the A+ Wrap Repair System.

Q Is the Certification applicable for other water-activated systems?
A Yes, but only if a review of the application steps coincides with the application technique specified for A+ Wrap system. As a minimum, the Installer or Trainer may forgo the A+ Wrap training by passing an exam to ensure fundamental knowledge of application technique (i.e. removal of sharp edges, surface preparation, defect limits, etc.).

Q Once someone is properly trained and Certified, how long does the Certification last?
A

1) Certified Installers - the certification is for one (1) year from the time of the last verifiable installation.

2)Certified Trainers – the certification is for one (1) year from the time of the last verifiable training.

Q What is meant by “verifiable installation or training”?
A Each Installation Training Manual has an Installation/Training Log. This manual is meant to always be available during installations or training courses, thus enabling a recording of such items. It is also recommended that the Log be periodically copied and faxed to Pipe Wrap L.L.C. in the event the hardcopy is lost or misplaced.

Q If the Certification period has expired, is it required for the individual to be retrained?
A No, as long as the expiration period is less than two (2) years, the individual may be re- certified by passing a written exam. Upon successful completion of the written exam, a renewed Certification will be issued.

Q How is the A+ Wrap Repair Systems similar to other water-activator composite sleeving systems?
A

1) The construction of the A+ Wrap Sleeve uses at least equivalent raw materials, thus testing of other water-activated systems- characterizing material behavior is still applicable. The materials for A+ Wrap are manufactured to provide a verifiable superior laminate construction enabling distinct advantages over the other water-activated composite sleeves.

2)The A+ Wrap System also has a “smart pig detectability” feature, but without the pit-falls associated with creating potential cathodic reactions.

Q How is the A+ Wrap Repair System different from other water-activated composite sleeving systems?
A

1) The A+ Wrap System has been and will continue to be tested as an on-going process to ensure that material performance meets the requirements as specified. This is to ensure that manufacturing deviations do not occur.

2) The A+ Wrap System utilizes specifically designed Detector Tabs that are “magnetically detectable” to enable smart pigs to identify repaired areas enabling the
operator to only address the defect areas not previously rehabilitated.

3)The Detector Tabs used in the A+ Wrap System are designed to prevent the introduction of any cathodic reactions between the parent pipe and the tabs. Basically add a benefit without adding a future problem.

4) The A+ Wrap System’s composite sleeve has a superior laminate construction enabling distinct advantages over other water-activated composite sleeving systems.

Q How is the A+ Wrap Repair System different from rigid composite sleeving
systems?
A

1) The A+ Wrap System is conformable, thus the restrictions of pipe ovality and bend radius do not apply except within the guidelines of API Specifications.

2) The A+ Wrap System has a superior laminate construction enabling distinct advantages over the rigid composite sleeves.

3) The A+ Wrap System utilizes specifically designed Detector Tabs that are “magnetically detectable” to enable smart pigs to identify repaired areas enabling the
operator to only address the defect areas not previously rehabilitated.

4)The Detector Tabs used in the A+ Wrap System are designed to prevent the introduction of any cathodic reactions between the parent pipe and the tabs. Basically add a benefit without adding a future problem.

5) The A+ Wrap System does not require the use, handling or storage of any
hazardous chemicals.

6)The application of the A+ Wrap System is relatively seamless with minimal transition time when additional wraps are required to ensure the integrity of the repair.

7)The A+ Wrap System is more economical because the system is offered in over sixteen (16) various sizes, thus enabling the end user to make the smart choice to only purchase the required materials based on the defect length.

Q Since the A+ Wrap System basically over-wraps layers of material over the entire repair, is the integrity better than rigid composite sleeves?
A If both types of systems are applied correctly according to the respective manufacturers’ specification, the answer is NO. The integrity of the repairs is basically the same, but the operative words are “applied correctly”. Due to the limitations of available product widths for rigid composite sleeves, many times additional separate units are required to be “butted adjacent to each other” with a maximum gap requirement. More handling of product with more requirements for application could possibly result in a questionable repair.

Q Rigid Composite Systems mention “edge effect” and associated limits, does this apply to the A+ Wrap System?
A

1) “Edge Effect” is a strength of materials phenomena not exclusive to Rigid Composite Sleeving Systems in which residual reinforcement extends beyond the physical limits of the actual reinforcing material. This phenomena applies to all materials added as a reinforcement, such as steel choke collars and the A+ Wrap System.

2)The use of the “Edge Effect” phenomena by Rigid Composite Systems enables the systems to have a misalignment of approximately 1/2" from one unit to another without affecting the structural integrity of the repair. Although the structural integrity of the repair is not in question, the gap between units could be a point for moisture ingress. More potential points of moisture ingress, the higher the probability of an occurrence.

3)The A+ Wrap System does not typically utilize the strength of materials phenomena because the systems are designed such that continuous coverage of product does not leave gaps, so less points of interest for moisture ingress.

Q What are the most common mistakes made during the application of the A+ Wrap System?
A

1) One common mistake made during the application of the A+ Wrap System is not applying enough water to the wraps. Each layer should be sufficiently “wetted” with water during the application. Excess water will not jeopardize the repair. All excess water will be shed during the tightening of each layer as it is applied to the repair area.

2)The other most common mistake is opening up the package for the repair sleeves
before the repair is ready to be made. The A+ Wrap sleeve are water-activated.
The products will extract moisture out of the air.

Q

How much should the A+ Wrap Repair extend beyond the repair area?

A

1) The use of the A+ Wrap System without the Magnetically Detectable Tabs
should extend a minimum of 2” beyond both sides of the defect area.

2) The use of the A+ Wrap System with the Magnetically Detectable Tabs
should extend a minimum of 4” beyond both sides of the defect area.

3) The above requirements also apply when utilizing the Pipe Wrap Plus™ System.

Q What is the cure time of the A+ Wrap System?
A Set Time is approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour dependent on temperature and is ready for the pipe coating. Once the pipe coating has cured, the repair area is ready for “back-fill”. Full cure of either system is 24 hours, but the aforementioned “back-filling” step prior to achieving full cure is not detrimental to the integrity of the repair.

Q During the cure process, the A+ Wrap Repair Systems seems to be out-gassing. Are these gases hazardous?
A

No, the chemical curing process requires the hydrogen atoms extracted from the water molecule while the same process expels carbon atoms which couples with the free oxygen to form carbon dioxide ~ the gas that is escaping (out-gassed).

Q Since water is used to activate the curing mechanism, does that imply that the product is also water soluble?
A No, although t he A+ Wrap Sleeve is water-activated and water is considered as a “universal solvent”, the product is not water soluble. That is the reason the product is additionally used for under water applications.

Q Can A+ Wrap System be installed on an active blowing leak?
A No, the A+ Wrap System is designed for the structural repair of degraded piping, not a leak repair. Applying the product onto an active leak will result in “washing away” the resin before is cures and additionally by-products from the leak with contaminate the composite laminate.

Q Is the A+ Wrap System susceptible to microbial attack such as Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC)?
A

Although MIC is a serious problem with metal, they pose no difficulty with FRP materials because bacteria has no appetite for high molecular weight polymers. Due to this known fact, the FRP Industry has never seen any evidence of MIC corrosion. At times people have been concerned with fungus because some thermoplastics can be degraded by fungus. With FRP, there has never been any proof that this happens. In cases where fungus attack was suspected, a close examination reveals that the apparent fungus growth is really on soil particles, which are physically adhering to exhume FRP. Gasoline tanks buried in sulfate containing soils are virtually unaffected after thirty years or so, while metal tanks under the same conditions would be severely corroded by sulfate reducing bacteria.

Q Why is it important to seal the ends of the A+ Wrap Sleeve?
A The ends of the A+ Wrap Sleeve represent potential points of moisture ingress.

Q What is the purpose of the Plastic Constrictor Wrap?
A The Constrictor Wrap is used to compact the entire composite sleeve, thus minimizing voids and entrapped gases within the laminate stack-up.

Q What external pipe coating is recommended to provide U-V protections for above ground pipe?
A

The only specific recommendations in reference to pipe coatings are:

A) It must be applied after the A+ Wrap System has cured (approximately 1 hour after installation).
B) It must be opaque.
C) It must bond to composite.

We have no recommendations for a specific type of pipe coating (mastic coatings, shrink sleeves, etc.) but the coating used for above ground applications must have UV inhibitors to minimize UV degradations to itself.

Q How does the impact resistance of the A+ Wrap sleeve compare to paint or
elastomeric coatings?
A

It depends on the type of paint or coating it is compared to because the failure modes for the materials are different. The failure mode for a coating has more to do with shear strength while the failure mode for A+ Wrap has to do with interlaminar fracture toughness.

In relation to elongation, most paints have at least 6% while elastomeric coating can have up to 200%. The A+ Wrap sleeve typically has approximately 4% elongation and the epoxy coating has approximately 12% elongation. Although the cured A+ Wrap system will typically have a higher impact toughness than the coatings, it is advisable that the A+ Wrap be inspected whenever the coating shows evidence of impact.
